hopeless. He sent for his sons. He asked them to break a bundle of sticks. They
tried turn by turn, but failed to do so. Now the old man asked them to untie the
bundle. He gave one stick to the youngest one and asked him to break it. He
easily broke it. Now he gave one stick to the middle one. He also broke it. In
the end, the eldest one tried and he broke the stick as well. The old man struck

them. One of them knew how to climb up the tree. He at once climbed up and
did not care for his friend. The other friend knew that the bear does not harm
the dead. He lay down of himself and held his breath like a dead person. The
bear came near, sniffed, took him to be dead and went away. When the bear

tailor hit upon a mischief. He pricked a needle in the trunk of the elephant
when it came to the shop. The elephant calmly went to the river, drank water
and filled its trunk with muddy water. On reaching the shop, it put its trunk into
the shop through the window. It squirted dirty water on the clothes of his

chief. The chief put him the same question. The boy gave the same reply. The
boy took out forty gold coins and put them before the chief. The chief was

Once there was a poor farmer. He had a little son who always went with
him where-ever he went. He had a donkey for transportation of different things.

donkey. He decided to take it to the market and sell it there. When he started,
his son was also ready to go with him. On the way to market, they had to face a
difficult situation. The little son was riding while the father was walking along.
The people said how disobedient the son was. The old man was walking while
his son was riding the donkey. The son felt ashamed to hear this. He requested
his father to ride the donkey. The father did so. Now the people said how cruel
the father was. His little son was walking while he was riding the donkey. The
father felt ashamed. He asked his son to come and ride the donkey. Now the

light. Now it made it its routine to do so daily. It slipped in the stream and got
up after a lot of time. The farmer saw through his trick. He hit upon a plan. He
loaded the donkey with cotton. When they came near the stream, the donkey
slipped. It laid in the stream for much time. The farmer struck it with a stick to
make it get out. It tried to get up but could not. It felt the load too heavy to

1. To father explaining why you failed in the last test/ examination
Examination Hall,
City ABC,
May 12, 2009
Dear Father,
Your letter came to hand yesterday. You have asked me why I failed in
the last test/ examination.
Well, it is for two reasons. First, our lecturer in English and Economics
were transferred six months before the examination. Lecturers in their place
never came to join. Thus we all suffered. Second, I fell ill a few days before the
examination. I thought it would get down within a few days. But, it prolonged
and lasted for two weeks. The doctor advised complete rest but I had to appear
in the examination. I could not revise my lessons properly. In the meantime, the
papers started. Then the result was to be clear. I failed in two subjects.
Now when the examination is over, I have made up the deficiency. I
hope to get good marks this time. I only need your blessings. Please convey my
regards to mom and all at home.
Yours affectionately,

2. To younger brother advising him about the choice of profession
Examination Hall,
City ABC,
May 12, 2009
Dear Ali,
Your letter came to ha nd yesterday. You have asked me about the choice
of profession.
Well, there are many professions and some reasonable ones. Amongst
them, teaching is the one that fits you. I think, you can serve the nation through
this profession best. No doubt, there are other professions to serve the nation.
But, I think a teacher can serve the best. Now the question why teaching after
all.
First, teaching is the noblest profession. A good teacher is a good
preacher too. He can teach good things. He can revolutionize the society. This
is what the prophets have been doing. Second, teaching is the most respectable
profession. The teacher gets the most respect from so many people. Engineers,
doctors, officers; all respect the teacher. It is because he raises them to their
present status. Third, teaching is lucrative profession. It can add to your income
to a great extent. You can get part time job in some academy and get
reasonable wages.
In the light of the above, you can understand why I suggest this career
for you.
Yours affectionately,

Dear Farooq,
I have not heard from you for the last few weeks. Your friends meet me
very often. They don't have a good report about you. You mix with bad boys.
You have started smoking. You don't take part in any game. Sometimes, you
study so hard that you become a book-worm. All these things are very bad.
How is it? I cannot just imagine why it is so.
Brother! You know we are a religious family. We are to be model for
others. You know smoking is injurious to health. Again you know that games
are necessary for health and health is wealth.

14.To father telling him about your hostel life
Examination Hall,
City ABC,
May 12, 2009
Dear Father,
Your letter came to hand yesterday. You have asked me abou t my hostel
life. Well, in the beginning I found it hard and boring. But with the passage of
time, things started becoming interesting. Every thing looked strange. But now
every thing is changing into familiar and acceptable.
In the beginning, I thought the discipline very stiff and stern. But by and
by I got accustomed to it. Now I think that discipline is a necessary part of life.
We have to get up and go to bed according to a time table. Then we have time
fixed for meals. Meals served here are nice ones, though not so tasty as we
have at home. Then there is Dars-e-Quran every afternoon. At night we have a
short walk. Then we study and go to bed. I would say hostel life is fantastic.
With regards to all at home, I would like to end.

in deserts. Camels go slowly. But they go on walking for hours on the burning sand and
in the blazing sun. Camels carry heavy loads, much heavier in weight than any other
beast of burden can. While the other animals’ feet sink into the sand, nature has made the
feet of camels such that it is not at all difficult for it to walk on the sand. The camel is
superior to all other animals because it can go without food and drink for days and weeks.

physique. He plays the game as he should. He observes all the rules and regulations of
games. The amateur player plays honestly. He becomes a disciplined gentleman and a
respectable citizen. He accepts defeat but does not resort to cheating or other unfair
means to win. If he wins a game, he feels happy but he is not sad at losing one.

his trunk with muddy water. On reaching the shop of the tailor, he put his trunk into it

7: The Indian National Congress was founded in 1885 by a liberal English man Mr.
A. O. Hume. He had joined the Indian Civil Service in 1849 and had retired from service
after shouldering different responsibilities. He had been watching the ugly law and order
situation in the country quite frequently. He was of the opinion that the high handed rule
of the Britishers was paving way for any un-expected outburst of violence. His plan was
to put a safety valve to minimize the mounting sentiments against the British rule. It was
meant to provide an outlet which could ventilate the revolutionary spirit. Mr. Hume put
his plan before Lord Duffrin.

8: In December, 1930, Dr, Muhammad Iqbal was invited to preside over the annual
meeting of the All India Muslim League at Allahabad. In his address, he openly opposed
the idea of power-sharing together of Hindus and Muslims as one Nation. He declared
that the move to apply one constitution to both the Hindus and the Muslims would result
in a civil war. He wanted to see the Punjab, Sind, Baluchistan and the NWFP a single
state for the Muslims, so that they should live according to the teachings of Islam. We
can say that Allama Iqbal was the first thinker to give us the idea of a separate homeland
for the Muslims of India i.e. partition of the sub-continent into two sovereign states. The
Muslims soon realized the importance of the demand for two separate states. It was then
that the Pakistan Resolution was adopted in 1940.

worth little. But, it seemed a whole fortune to her, who never had anything of her own
before. She rubbed it clean on the sleeves of her blue cotton jacket and put it into her

10: Iqbal is not only the greatest poet of our age, but also one of the greatest poets of
all times. There are not many poets who wrote as many great poems as he did. He did not
write poetry for poetry’s sake. He was in fact much more than a mere poet. He was a
learned man. He was a great scholar and philosopher. He was a political leader of great
importance. But, more than anything he was a Muslim who had a great love for God and
His Prophet (peace be upon him). He wrote poetry to express the great and ever-lasting
truths of philosophy, history and Islam. He wrote poetry to awaken the Muslims of the
whole world from the deep sleep and asked them to unite.

one another and do only the work assigned to them. They go out in search of food in an
orderly fashion, marching in lines and columns like soldiers. Different groups of social
ants have different jobs to do. They manage their affairs through division of labour. Some
ants guard and protect their community. They fight the other insects who attack them or
raid their colony. They are called soldier ants. Another group gathers food for the whole
community. The social ants have not learnt this division of labour. They have inherited it.

12: Early rising is a good habit as it gives a good start to our day’s work. We gain
time while the late risers are asleep. The early risers have another advantage also and that
is that they enjoy good and sound health. Those who are out of bed early, have plenty of
time to do their work carefully, steadily and completely. They do not have to put off
anything to the next day. The early riser is always happy, fresh and smart. He enjoys his
work while those who are out of bed late find their duty dull and dry and do it most unwillingly.
Early-rising is, therefore, key to success in life.
Questions:
i. What kind of habit is early rising?
ii. Why can an early riser do more work than the late riser?
iii. Why does an early riser enjoy good health?
iv. Why does a late riser find his work dull and dry?

13: Musa was in chief command and the gates were in his charge. They had been
barred when the Christians were in view; but Musa threw them open. “Our bodies”, he
said, “will bar the gates”. The young men were kindled by such words, and when he told
them, “We have nothing to fight for but the ground on which we stand on, and without
which we are without a home or a country”. They were ready to die with him. With such
a leader, the Moorish cavaliers performed feats of bravery in the plain which divided the
camp from the city.
Questions:
i. Who was the chief commander and what was in his charge?
ii. When were the gates barred?
iii. Who threw them open?
iv. What did Musa say?
v. What effect had his words on the young men?
vi. What divided the city from the camp?
14: The Sultan sent agents to all parts of the East to buy rare manuscripts, and bring
them to Cordova. His men were constantly searching the book sellers’ shops at Cairo,
Damascus and Baghdad for rare volumes for his library. When the book was not to be
bought at any price, he would have it copied; and sometimes even hear of what was in the
author’s brain, he would send him a handsome present, and beg him to send the first copy
to Cordova. By such means, he gathered no fewer than four hundred books and this at a
time when printing was not known, and every copy had to be painfully copied, in the fine
hand of the professional copyist.
Questions:
i. Why did Sultan send his men to all parts of the East?
ii. Where and what for they searched the booksellers shops?
iii. What would he do when any book was not to be bought at any price?
iv. What would he do when the author had not yet written the book?

vi. Why was it difficult to collect so many books in those days?
15: Making pottery on potter’s wheel is called “throwing”. The thrower is a very
skillful workman. But there is another method of shaping articles out of clay,
“moulding”. A plaster mould is made and the clay is pressed into it. This is a quick and
less difficult way and must be used to make things like handles; but all the most beautiful
pottery is thrown. When a piece of pottery is taken off the wheel, it is put aside to dry,
after which a design may be painted on it with special colours that will stand great heat. It
is then ready to be fired. This is done in a large oven, or kiln. The pieces of pottery are
placed in earthenware tubs called “saggers” so that the flames cannot touch the pottery.
Questions:
i. What is throwing?
ii. What is the other method of shaping articles?
iii. What is the advantage of moulding?
iv. How does the potter make designs on the pieces of pottery?
v. How is pottery baked in fire?

15: About sixty years ago the question of choosing a profession was not taken up
seriously. A son generally followed the trade of his father. But now-a-days, one can take
up any profession one likes. The students, who make the right choice of profession, are
always successful. For the right choice of profession there should be some definite aim.
The students, who do not have any definite aim, suffer in the end as they also have
difficulty in finding a job. In choosing a profession the teacher and the parents play a
very important part. The teacher keeps an eye on his pupils. He studies their habits. So he
can put his students on the right path of life.
Questions:
i. What were the conditions about the choice of a profession sixty years ago?
ii. Why did the people not choose the profession seriously?
iii. Can a student of the present times choose his profession freely?
iv. What is the advantage of a right choice of profession?
v. How can a student choose his profession rightly?
vi. What will be the difficulty of a student who is reading without a definite aim?
vii. How can a teacher help his pupil in making a choice of profession?
